Plot: In this project, I tried to explore the impact of the visual heritage of my city, Naples, upon my family’s traditions. On the so-called “Cappuzelle” skulls, found in the Fontanelle cemetery, are engraved symbols which represent the link between life and death. In addition to this morbid imagery is evidence of ancient fertility rites, Christianity meeting Paganism in a sacred dance. I fell under the cemetery’s suggestive spell when, pregnant, I first visited this cemetery. The Coronavirus pandemic was beginning to take hold of Italy on New Years’ Eve, providing a backdrop for this project, where ancient archetypal images mingle with more familiar ones, birthing new omens.
