Plot: Every family is unhappy in its own way, especially those forced to live together in the same building of a Calabrian village where hatred is handed down like an inheritance. In this family, the unhappiest is Luisa Magno: 50 years old, rebellious, precarious, an affectionate mother but at war with everyone. Especially with Imma, her sister-in-law: younger, more beautiful, more established, and now her daily obsession. Imma, for her part, feels she is the victim of unjust persecution. If she recounts the abuses suffered for hours, Luisa cuts her off: Imma is just a tramp. While the two women challenge each other with complaints and insults, three elderly aunts, a tragicomic chorus, desperately try to restore peace. Their attempt takes the form of a family ‘trial,’ halfway between a sacrificial rite, group therapy, and a purifying tarantella. Luisa and Imma face each other in the final duel, in a crescendo where reality and fiction merge. Il quieto vivere (Quiet Living) is a fierce comedy that explores the antechamber of crime: that breaking point where anything can happen, but hasn’t happened yet.
